When I first started using email newsletters for my music career, my approach was completely different from what it is today. Back then, I leaned on strategies I’d picked up during my marketing days in the corporate world. My newsletters were formal, and I mostly used them to sell my music and invite people to shows. While that seemed logical at the time, it wasn’t very effective. It felt stale, and honestly, I noticed my audience wasn’t sticking around.

Over the years, I learned that people crave connection and authenticity. When I started sharing more personal stories—like family photos, the inspiration behind my songs, my health challenges, emotional struggles, and even family issues—I saw a huge shift. Not only did I get more responses and clicks, but I also began to form real bonds with my subscribers. They weren’t just numbers on a list anymore; they were people invested in my journey. Sharing these moments also gave me the opportunity to incorporate affiliate links for products that had helped me, adding even more value to my content.

That shift in strategy taught me the power of transparency and connection, which is why email marketing has become such a vital part of my career. In this article, I’ll share the essentials for crafting a newsletter strategy to grow your fanbase, focusing on two key areas: adding people to your mailing list and cultivating genuine relationships with your subscribers.

Step 1: Strategies to Add People to Your Mailing List

Growing your mailing list is the foundation of a successful email marketing strategy. Here are some proven ways to encourage fans to join:

Run Monthly Contests on Social Media

Contests are a fun, interactive way to grow your mailing list while engaging your audience. You could host a photo-sharing contest where fans submit their best concert moments, a “funniest caption” challenge for a photo you share, or a contest to design cover art for your next song or album. Another creative idea is a “Share Your Love Story” contest, where fans share personal stories tied to your music or themes in your songs.

By making joining your mailing list a requirement to enter, you can grow your audience while strengthening connections with your fans.

Provide Valuable Deliverables

Offering valuable, meaningful content to your audience is an excellent way to grow your mailing list and build trust with your fans. I personally experienced this when I went through a season of self-evaluation, wanting to become more intentional about how I showed up in the world. During that time, I created a values worksheet to help me define what mattered most in my life and align my actions with those values.

I decided to share this journey with my audience. I made the worksheet available as a free downloadable PDF in exchange for their email addresses, letting them know they’d also be added to my mailing list. To make the experience even more engaging, I followed it up with a short automated email series that detailed the process, explained how it had transformed my life, and encouraged them to use the worksheet to redefine their own lives if they felt called to.

The response was incredible. Not only did I add new subscribers to my mailing list, but I also strengthened the connection with my existing audience. The authenticity of the message and its personal significance resonated deeply with them.

If a values worksheet doesn’t align with your music or brand, think about what kind of resource could connect with your fans. Maybe it’s a practice routine for aspiring musicians, a concert planning checklist, or even a music-inspired journal template. The key is to provide something meaningful that reflects who you are as an artist and adds value to their lives.

This approach allows you to both grow your mailing list and reinforce the bond with your current subscribers. Don’t be afraid to share something personal—it’s often the most authentic ideas that resonate the most.

Promote Your Mailing List on Social Media

Regularly share posts about your mailing list on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Highlight the benefits of joining, such as early access to new releases, behind-the-scenes content, or exclusive discounts.

Utilize Your Website and Link-in-Bio Pages

Ensure your mailing list signup is prominently featured on your website and link-in-bio tools like Linktree. Make it easy for fans to join by keeping the form simple and accessible.

Mention Your Mailing List at Live Shows and in Videos

Use live events and online content as opportunities to grow your list. Share the link to sign up during shows, live streams, and in video descriptions or captions. A quick mention can go a long way in converting casual viewers into engaged subscribers.

Offer Exclusives to Subscribers

Give fans an irresistible reason to join your list by offering exclusive perks like early access to new songs, secret performance invites, or unreleased demos.

Free Ringtones or Music Downloads

Create a custom ringtone or exclusive track and offer it as a freebie for signing up. Fans love personalized gifts, and it’s a creative way to share your music while growing your audience.

Step 2: Cultivating Relationships with Your Subscribers

Adding people to your mailing list is just the beginning. The key to a successful email marketing strategy lies in building meaningful connections with your subscribers. Here’s how:

Celebrate Birthdays with Personal Touches

Ask for birthdays during the signup process and send out birthday cards. Physical cards add a special, tangible element that shows fans you truly value them.

Send Handwritten Thank You Notes

Express your gratitude to dedicated fans by sending handwritten and signed thank-you cards. This thoughtful gesture can leave a lasting impression and turn casual listeners into superfans.

Send Personal Messages

Every so often, reach out to individual fans with a personalized email or text. You can automate this process, but make it feel genuine by using their name and referencing their interactions with you. Adding a texting element to your strategy can also deepen the connection.

Be Consistent

Consistency is vital for maintaining trust and building rapport with your audience. Set a schedule for your newsletters—whether weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly—and stick to it. Share updates, stories, and exclusive content regularly to keep your audience engaged. Once a month works perfectly for me and for my audience. 

Let me share a moment of transparency: consistency has always been a challenge for me. There have been times when I’ve gone months without sending a single newsletter. When I finally got back on track and sent out a newsletter after a long hiatus, I noticed a wave of unsubscribes. I realized that people had likely forgotten who I was, and my sudden email may have felt disingenuous—especially since I didn’t acknowledge the gap in communication.

I’ve since learned that whenever I find myself in a rut, it’s important to be upfront. When I return from a hiatus, I make it a point to apologize for the break and, if applicable, explain what happened. This approach seems to resonate with my audience and helps reduce the number of unsubscribes.

Staying consistent is no small task, and I still struggle with it at times. But I remind myself that people are looking forward to hearing from me, and even if some come and go, the true supporters—the ones who truly connect with you and your music—will stick around. So, be encouraged. The effort to maintain consistency is always worth it, and over time, it builds trust and rapport that will strengthen your relationship with your audience.

This email not only makes them feel valued, but it also gives them a reason to participate actively in your journey, turning casual listeners into involved fans who look forward to special events and live experiences with you.

  2. Purpose: Reward their interest and create a sense of community and exclusivity.

The final email in your welcome series is all about meaning and reflection. Share a message about your mission, your purpose, and how that shapes your music. Use this opportunity to express gratitude for having them on this journey with you. You can invite them to share their own stories or reflections in response, creating a heartfelt connection based on shared values. If you’re like me, you’re always looking for ways to connect with your fans on a deeper level. Social media is great and all, but there’s something incredibly powerful about having a direct line to your fans through email. It’s personal, it’s direct, and best of all, it’s yours to control. But how do you get those precious email sign-ups in the first place? I’ve tested many different ways to make this happen, so I’ve got a lot of ideas. I pulled them together in this list below and I’ll tell you which ones worked for me and which ones didn’t work so well. Here are 10 sign-up offer ideas that will attract subscribers to your mailing list. Let’s dive in!

1. Exclusive Music Downloads

Who doesn’t love free music, right? Offering exclusive music downloads is a surefire way to entice fans. This could be an unreleased track, an acoustic version of one of your popular songs, or even a remix. When fans know they can get something unique just by joining your mailing list, they’re much more likely to hit that subscribe button.

Imagine this: A fan visits your website and sees a banner that says, “Sign up for my newsletter and get an exclusive download of my new single!” It’s hard to resist. Plus, it gives you a chance to showcase new material and keep your audience engaged. This method works really well for me, especially if I’m offering a version that is not offered anywhere else.

Hot tip: Add snippets from a few of your best reviews to build even more excitement and intrigue.

2. Early Access

Everyone loves being the first to know or have something. Offering early access to your new singles, albums, or music videos can be a massive draw. It makes your fans feel special and valued.

Let your social media followers know each time something is released that you’re sending an “exclusive early release out to your mailing list.” This way you can use every release to help build your list. This creates a sense of exclusivity and makes your fans feel like insiders. This also works great for concert tickets. Let your email subscribers be the first to buy tickets, and they’ll feel rewarded for their loyalty.

For each newsletter mailing, you can offer a link to a private video where you talk about the inspiration behind your latest songs, projects, etc. showing clips from your recording space. It’s personal, it’s engaging, and it gives fans a reason to not only join, but stay subscribed.

I find that, having such content only available to my subscribers creates that extra incentive to join. With these special pieces of content though, I like to offer sneak peeks on social media as much as I can to further promote my mailing list. This mehtod is a win-win!

4. Discounts and Offers

Here’s another idea. Offer discount codes for your merchandise or upcoming album purchases to incentivize fans to join your mailing list. You can also provide coupons for concert tickets or VIP packages.

Try offering a special 20% discount on their first merchandise purchase in exchange for their email address. This may encourage sign-ups as well as boost your merch sales.

I thought this option was an amazing idea! However in trying it, I found that I needed to stack another added value on top of it and create a ‘bundle’ offer. Offering a discount by itself wasn’t as effective. While a discount offer works well with people already connected on my maling list, I don’t think people coming into my world for the first time are really all that interested in buying a shirt or an entire album quite yet. Combining the discount offer with a freebie worked better for me.

5. Contests and Giveaways

Running contests and giveaways is a fantastic way to grow your email list. People love the chance to win something, especially if it’s something they’re passionate about, like music or concert tickets.

Consider this: “Sign up for my newsletter for a chance to win a signed vinyl copy of my latest album!” This creates excitement and encourages fans to spread the word. Plus, it’s a great way to reward your loyal subscribers with exclusive opportunities.

6. Special Downloads

Beyond just music, offer other downloadable content that fans might find valuable. This could be lyric sheets, chord charts, or sheet music. Digital wallpapers, ringtones, and exclusive photo sets are also great ideas. I have offered a handful of downloadables such as a free workbook for kids, a journal, and a values worksheet. All of these have worked out great! I try to combine my downloadables with calendar observance days to make it more effective. For example, I offered the free kids’ workbook for Children’s Day (second Sunday in June).

Here’s another example… “Subscribe to my mailing list and get a free digital booklet with lyrics and chords for all my songs!” This not only provides value to your fans but also encourages them to engage more deeply with your music.

7. Fan Exclusives

Creating a sense of community is key to building a loyal fanbase. Offer access to a private online community or forum where your fans can interact with you and each other. This could be a dedicated Facebook group, a Discord server, or a forum on your website.

Imagine inviting your email subscribers to join a private group where you regularly post updates, share new music first, and even have casual chats. This kind of exclusive access makes fans feel like they’re part of something special. For this, I offered a VIP Circle. For who joins my mailing list, they are added to the VIP Circle where they have access to fun things like backstage content, discounts, and candid conversations.

8. Creative Content

Do you have any other passions? Would your fans be interested in sharing in some of your other endeavors? Maybe you are a visual artist in addition to being a musician? Or maybe you create wooden furniture as another hustle? Think about how you can incorporate some of your other ventures into your musical world.

For example, a musician who also creates wooden furniture might be able to offer furniture templates or video tutorial related to creating furniture pieces out of wood and use their music as a backdrop.

9. Interactive Content

Engagement is key in building a loyal fanbase. Use polls, surveys, and quizzes to create a buzz around signing up to your mailing list. This not only entertains your fans but also provides you with valuable feedback.

Try sharing a fun quiz like, “Which of my songs best describes your personality?” Fans will enjoy participating, and it gives you insights into their preferences and interests. Plus, it keeps your newsletter promotions fun and engaging! Be sure to ask for permission to add them to your mailing list when they fill out your form!

We just wrapped up a very enlightening workshop about writing an artist bio that promotes intrigue and allure. In 2023, it’s not enough to write out your accolades and accomplishments, where you’re from, and what genres you perform and try to call that a bio. People are looking for something new and interesting that they can resonate with.

They are looking for something more.

In the workshop, we talked about the elements of a strong bio and what not to do. We also demonstrated how to do the write-up featuring a fellow musician. It was like a mastermind collective as we all worked together on it. Dani is an award-winning songwriter—her song, Yesterday’s Story, was awarded 2nd place in Indie International’s 2022 Songwriting competition and many of her other songs have garnered recognition and praise. Dani has one of those voices that immediately draws you in to tell a story—her vocals are both smooth and vintage as well as delicate and airy, and her music has a wistful impressionistic flavor to it. Dani enjoys expressing universal, emotional topics in her music—stories about love, relationships, personal struggles, and ordinary life—and her songs are filled with heartfelt nostalgia and hypnotizing grace. Dani’s vision for her upcoming EP is to capture the soft spoken female perspective in songs that are honest and heartfelt and highlight the beauty in vulnerability.

We asked Dani a few more questions about her life as a musician, some of her upcoming projects, and a few thought-provoking questions as well. What we learned from that process was that Dani actually has a lot more to say to provide a context that would help the reader understand how Dani’s music can fit into their world.

Starting a career as a singer-songwriter is one of the most satisfying things you can do for yourself because you are pursuing an opportunity to follow your passion. There are a lot of options to choose from on which route to go as far as branding and how to market yourself and what types of gigs you choose to do or if you want to gig at all. In this article, I share the 10 things you need to have in place to build a successful career as a singer-songwriter.

Equipment

In order to start a career as a singer-songwriter there are some pieces of equipment you’ll need to keep your business flowing smoothly. Let’s start with the basics. You’ll need a laptop for day-to-day business flow. A good laptop equipped with graphics capability for displaying flyers, colors, and promo pictures in their best light is essential. You’ll also need a laptop that has lots of drive space and memory for handling large files like videos, MP3s, AIFF files, large posters, and banners. In addition to a laptop computer, you’ll need some accessories. A reliable webcam would be great for making professional-looking videos along with a microphone that plugs into your computer for recording vocals as well as achieving crisp audio for YouTube and live-streaming presentations. If you are recording your music at home with your laptop, you will need a good pair of headphones for recording and a set-up for a small home recording studio. This gets you to a good working level for conducting general business. If you’re preforming live, you’ll need a sound system along with a mic stand and a good vocal microphone.

Instruments

Let’s not forget instruments! If you are planning on doing a significant amount of performing or studio recording, then you should have at least one instrument at your disposal. Guitar or piano seems to be the standard for singer-songwriters. However the cello, bass, ukulele, and mandolin are all popular options as well.

Songwriting Tools

Songwriting Journals are great for singer-songwriters because they help us keep track of all of our song ideas in written form. The other thing that helps out tremendously is a voice recorder. That way, if you’re on the go and you have a melody or lyric idea, you can simply record it and come back to it later. There are many voice recording apps available if you have an iPhone or Android. A rhyming dictionary may come in handy as well when you are trying to find a perfect rhyme. The other thing that has helped me find different notes and interesting chords to create depth in my song instrumentation is a chord book like this one.

Music

As a singer-songwriter, you will definitely need music to showcase and sell as part of your artistic portfolio. When people look you up on your website and don’t see any music, it creates confusion. They don’t know if you’re just starting out, or if you are in the middle of a re-brand, or if you are playing some sort of sick joke. Either way, without any music to show for yourself, you will lose some credibility. Before doing any marketing, promoting, or trying to get gigs, you need to work on getting a comfortable amount (at least 3 to 6) of songs up and available to stream and download.

Business Model

A business model is the set of activities you conduct in order to bring in money for your business. It is your plan for making a profit. It identifies the products and services you plan to sell, along with who you are selling it to, and how you’re going to not only cover expenses but earn a profit from your efforts.

Armed with a business model, you can execute a business for yourself that achieves your financial goals and creates stability for you and your family. While you may still find some success without a business model, you’ll be able to maximize, better target, and streamline your efforts for optimal results with one. Turn your interests into revenue-generating strategies and start earning more income with your music.

Online Presence

The best way to establish an online presence is through a website and domain that you own. This gives you ultimate control over how your information is presented and how your brand is portrayed. You can set up a domain and hosting starting at only $2.95/month with Bluehost. In addition to your own website, choosing which social media profiles you will establish a presence on is recommended to enhance dialogue and engagement with your followers. Social media options are aplenty. Choosing the right social media platforms that suit your engagement goals is key. For example, if your audience is a bit older and into engaging in long-form dialogue, Facebook might be best. Alternatively, if your audience is younger, TikTok may be better suited for your music.

Marketing and Promo Strategy (to Build a Fanbase)

Any business person should be actively engaging in some form of marketing to get their product or service in the eyes of those who need it. Being a musician is no different. Finding ways to get your music in front of those who need to hear it can help you grow your fanbase exponentially. The larger your fanbase is, the more opportunity you have to sell your products and services.

A marketing strategy consists of a timeline of efforts you will make both online and off to increase exposure. It can be for specific launches or it can be generalized. Here’s an example of a marketing strategy…

  • Social Media – Posting to YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram on a weekly basis.
  • Email Marketing – Building an email list and providing consistent bi-weekly email content.
  • Blogging and SEO – Creating weekly blog posts that attract search engine traffic.
  • Community Involvement – Hosting local events, putting up flyers around town, street team activities.
  • Collaboration – Co-Promoting opportunities with other musicians, reaching out to local venues about my music, reaching out to event planners.
  • Paid Advertising – Advertise specific posts on Instagram
  • Online Placements – Adding a music profile to various online platforms for gigging purposes

These are just some examples. There are many more to choose form. A well-rounded marketing strategy includes activities that you will engage in online and offline and it utilizes various forms of promotion platforms and activities.

Direct Line for Engagement (Email Newsletter or Texting Service)

You’ll need to decide how you will engage with your followers directly. Having a social media and website presence is great, but in order to effectively communicate and engage with your followers a form of contact is needed. This includes an email platform or it can be a texting community, Discord, or even a Messenger (Facebook) or Close Friends (Instagram) list. While email is the traditional route, there are many more ways to reach your followers directly. Whichever you choose, make sure that the majority of your fanbase has access to it.

Gigs

As a singer-songwriter, one of the best ways to earn money is through gigging and maintaining a gigging calendar. Traditional gigs at venues can be quite profitable if you can manage to get booked, do some touring, and get into weekly rotations in your local area. Contact Management System

Keeping track of all of your contacts can be a challenge if you’re not organized. As a singer-songwriter, you have many different types of people in your network that you connect with on a regular basis such as followers, venue contacts, industry professionals, your street team, members of the press, etc. Having a CRM database or a platform to manage all of your contacts in one place can save you a lot of time and help you stay organized. There are some platforms, such as Hubspot, that even offer free CRM services.

Building a career based on your artistic endeavors is not easy because it is a very personal venture. Be patient with yourself. It may take a few tries to find the right mix of product / service / marketing to figure out what works for you. Because artistic business ventures are so personal and highly customizable to the individual, there may not be many ‘proven-models’ to follow verbatim. However, many artists have done this (including myself) and are still doing it. So it can definitely be done and it is in your reach! Since the Napster takeover in the early 2000s, the music industry has been in a constant state of evolution. With the changing landscape, musicians have been continuously adapting to find success in what 20th-century musicians would have called “non-traditional” avenues.

However, these non-traditional avenues are now some of the most commonly taken, one of which is sync licensing. Nowadays, every burgeoning musician has the ability to land their music in some of the industry’s top television shows and films. 

Not only is sync licensing a great tool for artists who want to expose their music to larger audiences, but it’s also one of the best ways musicians can earn money.

Interestingly enough, sync licensing still feels like it’s in its wild west days, and navigating the process can feel overwhelming. Luckily, you’ve found yourself in the right place, as we’ve created an all-you-need-to-know guide for getting your music in TV and film.

Let’s dive in!

What Is Sync Licensing?

Let’s get the basics out of the way first. 

Synchronization licensing, or sync licensing, is the process of synchronizing music with visual media, whether television, film, video games, or advertisements. These visual media productions must secure the right to use your copyrighted music in their work. 

How these licenses are negotiated can vary based on the specific agreements, which we’ll get into in a bit. What’s important to note is that the gatekeeper to these visual productions is often a music supervisor.

What Role Do Music Supervisors Play?

Music supervisors arguably play one of the most pivotal roles in the world of sync licensing, providing a bridge between musicians and visual media creators. 

While the roles and responsibilities of a music supervisor can be quite fluid, they’re often responsible for two main things: song selection and clearances/licensing. They’ll often work closely with the creative visionaries of a given project, whether a director or producer, to find music that aligns with the project’s personality.

Once the music supervisor finds the right songs, they’ll get the necessary clearances and licensing rights from the rightsholders. They will negotiate with you, the artist or producer, and any adjacent rightsholders, such as your publisher or record label. This helps them ensure they have all the required permissions to use your music.

Where Are Music Supervisors Looking for Music?

Now that we know who the gatekeepers are, the question becomes, how do we get our music to them?

There are certainly plenty of experienced music supervisors in the industry with vast personal collections of music. It’s their job to stay updated with new releases and up-and-coming artists. However, beyond their personal catalogs, there are a few common ways music reaches the ears of music supervisors:

Music Libraries

Many music supervisors find their music in popular catalogs and music libraries, such as: 

  • Alibi
  • Marmoset
  • Nightingale

These libraries offer a one-stop shop for pre-cleared, sync-ready music. This makes it easy for supervisors to find music for their projects based on specific characteristics, such as genre, tempo, or mood.

Submissions

Publishers, labels, and music licensing companies often submit their artists’ songs to music supervisors for sync licensing opportunities. Having a company on your side to facilitate submissions and target the right supervisors working on projects that align with your music can be very beneficial.

Networking

As with anything in the music industry, finding success in sync is about building the right relationships, and sometimes simply having the right industry contacts is the best thing you can do. To network with professionals, consider attending conferences or industry events like Sync Summit or SXSW.

Of course, you can put in all of the networking time your brain has bandwidth for, but if your music isn’t up to par, it’s a moot point. 

What Makes Music ‘Syncable’?

While music is practically boundless, a few strategies might make your music more ‘syncable.’ 

Expand Your Music’s Reach

Let’s take a look at some of today’s biggest television shows. 

Yellowstone is filled to the brim with folk and country tunes from both major labels and independent artists. Then there’s the latest season of Selling Sunset on Netflix, which had songs in transition scenes from major sync artist Zayde Wolf, among others.

If we compare the two, one could argue that the ‘definition’ of sync music is pretty vast. It can come from all sorts of sources, with sounds varying significantly. However, for the sake of this article, let’s discuss universality – which I believe to be one of the most important aspects of great sync music. 

You want your sync music to feel versatile. While Colter Wall’s “Sleeping on the Blacktop” may have fit like a glove in Yellowstone, the song itself is pretty limited in terms of adaptability. 

On the other hand, you have a track like Zayde Wolf’s “Next Level,” which has not only a beautifully adaptable title and universal lyrical content but also a sonic palette that could amplify just about any major sports network promo.

Composing versatile sync music widens the opportunities for its use, from serving as background music in diverse media projects to complementing various commercial advertisements. This flexibility can greatly expand your audience and potential collaborations. 

However, it’s equally important to define what the music is intended for, bringing me to my next point:

Write for Your Imaginary Client

It’s often a good idea to approach your songwriting and music production as if you were creating that track for a specific client. Consider the type of music you hear in different verticals, such as:

  • Trailers
  • Advertising
  • Sports
  • Promos
  • Gaming
  • Specific television shows

It’s equally important to consider moods and themes. For example, a song with a strong female vocal and an uplifting instrumental might be the perfect culprit for an advertisement centered on female empowerment. Similarly, an upbeat disco-pop track with a quirky spoken word delivery might be the ideal fit for a fashion-centric advertisement. 

This helps guide the creative process, ensuring the music effectively communicates your desired mood, narrative, or theme and truly resonates with the intended audience or application.

Keep Up With the Trends

Remember, trends are constantly changing, so make sure you’re up to date with what you’re hearing now and not what you heard five years ago. 

Yes, the stomp-clap, chain-dropping, blues-riffing, Black Keys-style music may have found its way into a million advertisements back in 2015 (so much so that Fred Armisen even spoofed it on Portlandia). But if we look at the ad department, we’re starting to see an emergence of Latinx rap from artists like Jarina DeMarco and bubblegum indie pop from artists like Teddi Gold.

Staying in the loop about the latest sync music trends can really give you a leg up. It’s all about catching the eye – or rather, the ear – of those music supervisors looking for the perfect tune for their project. If your music aligns with what’s hot right now, it’s more likely to get noticed and used, which is the name of the game in the end, isn’t it?

Prepare Variations

Whatever the project, always ensure instrumentals, alternate versions, and stems are available when pitching. The sync licensing world moves quickly, and I can’t even begin to tell you the number of times I’ve received stem requests with turnarounds in less than an hour. 

Alt versions can also be beneficial if your track contains explicit themes or lyrics. You won’t get any calls from Disney if your track has profanity, so consider having a clean version on hand.

Focus on Quality

Lastly, always consider production quality. You want good arrangements, performances, and productions. Music supervisors don’t want music that sounds amateur.

You have a few general support options for music placement, including:

  • Sync licensing companies
  • Publishers
  • Libraries 
  • Labels

Each of these support systems has unique pros and cons, so let’s take a look at what you can expect from each.

Sync Licensing Companies

The job of sync licensing companies or sync agents is to secure sync licenses for clients by pitching music. The major benefit of working with a sync licensing company is that they’ve already established relationships with music supervisors over the years.

In return for landing a sync with your music, they’ll take a percentage of the sync fee. The beauty of working with a sync company is that you can retain your copyrights and remain independent while getting your music in the hands of those who matter.

Music Publishers

It’s better revenue for them and great support for you. However, depending on your deal with your label, you can often expect a higher fee percentage with each placement.

Of course, it’s difficult to make a blanket statement as to which option is the “best,” as it depends on the company and your contract with them. The best advice I can give you is to read everything in the proposed agreement before signing your music away and compare different agreements to find one that suits your project best. 

Lastly, be cautious when it comes to exclusive, long-term contracts with skewed splits that aren’t in your favor. Signing with a publisher willing to provide you with a $15,000 advance for 100% of your publishing rights might seem like the deal of a lifetime if you aren’t making money with your music right now. 

However, it’s a different story if that publisher turns around and lands your music in an Apple Ad with a $200,000 sync fee. You won’t see any revenue because you signed 100% of the publishing rights to your publisher.

While locking in a deal with a publisher or label may take some time, you can start by registering your songs today with reputable online sync platforms that connect you with music supervisors.

Sync licensing deals can often be complex, so it’s a good idea to seek legal advice if you’re unsure of something. With that said, there are a few basics to have a grip on, including usage rights and duration.

An agreement will typically have a usage rights clause, which dictates whether or not your music can be used for certain projects, media types, or in distinct territories. The duration is the length of the agreement. The main thing to look for when it comes to usage rights and duration is if there’s an exclusivity clause or any restrictions on using your music in the future.
