Musicians tend to be very temperamental souls. I know because I am one. My moods can swing from happy and positive to anger/worry and despair in a very short time span. I have trouble with being confident, having faith in my abilities, dealing with rejection, and more. Over the years, I’ve learned to cope by spending time alone, journaling, and engaging in physical activities. I’ve also learned about triggers — what they are for me, why they are there, how to avoid them, and what to do when I’ve been triggered.

One of the biggest factors that help me show up as my best self as a musician is mindfulness. More specifically, I’ve learned to be more in control of my emotions, feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and self-defeating thoughts by affirming myself.

Positive affirmations remind me of my purpose and help me to re-frame my thoughts to align more with my values and my true self. Often times we forget who we are and why we’re doing music. We get distracted by others — other musicians, gatekeepers, friends, haters, and other random stuff. These things can bring about self-doubt which hinders us from being our best.

With a mindfulness practice of affirming yourself, you can re-align your thoughts and promote balance in your mindset and overall disposition. You’ll be more productive, make even better music, be more present with your tribe, and be more satisfied and fulfilled in your music journey.
