It can be difficult to remain consistent and engaging on social media as an artist, especially when you don’t feel like you have anything new to say. A lot of artists tend to just go on a hiatus during that time. But this can be counter-productive to your goals and make you lose momentum. That’s why we’ve come up with 50 content ideas to help you stay relevant and engaging on social media. Our goal with this article is to share some content ideas that are not so obvious. Therefore, you won’t find ideas like promoting an upcoming show or your new album release. We all know how to do that. The following social media content ideas are meant to help you engage with your followers even when you don’t feel so creative.

Build Content Using Reader Participation

1. Host an opinion poll: Ask your follower a question and track what kind of answers you get. Could be a feedback question related to your music or something else all together. Make sure you chime in so that it’s interactive, and announce the results at the end so that there’s a conclusion to it.

2. Take a vote: Ask your followers to vote on picture or album cover or t-shirt options. Be willing to execute their pick so that they feel like they made an impact on your decision.

3. Ask for help: One of the great things about fans is that they’re often more than happy to help. Whether it’s sharing ideas on a song, album cover, or poster design, or recommendations on venues, lodging, session musicians, etc., your fans will jump at the opportunity to help you out with ideas or even connections they might have.

4. Ask for their thoughts on your work: Post a song demo or video and ask your followers for their thoughts on it. You do have to be open minded and thick skinned, because you will get some honest feedback. 

5. Write a song or poem together: This is a fun thing to do with your fans. Post the first couple of lines from a new song you’re working on and then invite your followers to add on to it.

 

6. Run a sharing promotion or contest: Offer a prize or discount for sharing. If giving a prize, you can draw names from all the participants and have one winner.

 7. Answer FAQ:. As an artist it’s a given that you will get a lot of questions from people about your music and your choice to pursue it. This can be used as content! Write down every frequently asked question and post them one at a time on social media as a series.

8. Hold a Q&A session: Promote a live Q&A period where you’ll answer fan questions. Be aware that there’s always a risk that no one shows up.

9. ‘Caption this’: Post a photo and ask your fans to come up with creative or funny captions.

10. Share (and ask for) predictions: For instance, “I predict that Weird Al will win the Grammy for Album of the Year. Who do you think will win?”.

11. Post a ‘truth or fiction’ question: Let your fans guess whether it’s the truth or a myth.

Generate Get-To-Know-You Content

12. Share what you are doing: Tell your fans about something fun you’re doing for your weekend or holiday…

13. Post candid shots: Share pictures of you doing daily tasks or the more mundane activities…

14. Share a childhood picture or moment: Bonus points if you can somehow connect it to your music career.

15. Write interesting facts about yourself or your band

17. Tell a Story: Share about something funny or interesting that happened to you.

18. Post about a recent let-down: This could be an illness or failure you’ve experienced. Be transparent. Your fans will love you even more by showing you are a real person.

Build Content Around Your Thoughts

19. Start a series: Post on a certain topic consistently for a period of time

20. Post about observance days: This is a great one to use in a pinch. There is something important connected to almost every day of the year, for instance, March 1 is Justin Bieber’s Birthday and National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day. Use the National Day Calendar to find out what’s being celebrated that day and say something about it.

21. Thank your Fans: A simple thank you can go a long way to building connections.

22. Share an event coming up that you’re excited about: You can even write up a whole blog about it. Also, it doesn’t have to be one of your shows, it can be someone else’s.

Build Content Around Your Music & Albums

23. Song lyrics: Share the lyrics from one of your songs. 

24. Share backstories to your songs: Talk about the meaning behind your songs, and why you wrote them. Don’t forget to provide a link to the songs so people can have a listen or buy it! You can do one song per post and make a series. That way it will help you produce tons of content. 

25. Latest News: Share something new, like a tour or collaboration you’re planning, introduce your newest band member, etc.

26. What’s new in the studio or updates from your latest project: If you’re not working on anything, do a look back on older projects and share something from behind the scenes.

27. Post a native video of you performing one of your original songs: Pro Tip: The more you can do this, the more shares you can generate. 

28. Post a creative or unexpected use for your music: For instance, “my music can help you unwind after a long day and goes great with a glass of red wine.” You can also ask your fans for their ideas.

Build Content From Your Purpose/Mission as an Artist

32. Share your Mission Statement: If you don’t have one, try putting one together. It will help you focus on your overall purpose as an artist. Sharing this with your fans will help them to appreciate you even more. Don’t have a mission statement? Build one here.

33. Why Music?: Create a post talking about why you started doing music.

34. Write a Series: Do several posts where you talk about things you love about being an artist that go beyond the music itself.

35. Inspiration: Write about something that inspires you or has made an impression on you.

Supporting Causes

36. Write about a Cause: Pick a cause you really believe in and write a post about it.

37. Community Service: Share pictures of you doing something for your favorite cause and explain why you’re doing it.

39. Create your own Memes: Everybody loves a good meme. Create a bunch and post them throughout the week.

40. Share motivational quotes: Include an image. Extra points if it’s your own quote and image. You can do this every Monday and call it Motivational Monday!

42. Conduct an interview: Interview an interesting person and post the video or blog entry.

43. Highlight another artist: Write about a fellow artist you know. Maybe you can make a deal with them and make it a swap. It can be good exposure to each other’s fans.

44. Recommend an album to listen to: Encourage your fans to listen to other music. It shows that you are willing to share and it promotes goodwill to your fellow musicians. Don’t forget to tag whoever you promote so they’ll know you referred them.

45. This day in Music History: Similar to #20. Something music-related has happened on every calendar day of the year. Use Today in Music History to get ideas.

 46. Music Industry Hot Topics: There’s always something going on in the music industry. Share your thoughts on the latest hot topics. Digital Music News is a great resource for the latest industry topics.

47. Share Music Industry Secrets: Write something you’ve learned about the music industry that your fans might not know.

 48. Create a new merch item and highlight it: You can design and sell your own products using Printful and then you don’t ever have to worry about inventory.

49. Hold a Flash Sale: Offer a merch item for a discount price to the first 5 fans that buy it.

50. Get Design Input: Ask your fans for their thoughts and ideas on new merch items you’re designing like t-shirts, hats, etc.
